Encounter
This morning I heard
the serpent talking.
What did it say?
Just what it always says:
"Evil is real"
(accompanied by the usual
glittering eyes,
flickering tongue).
"No!" I replied firmly,
"God is All."
I met the beady eyes—
gaze for gaze—
until the mythical creature
dissolved in shafts of light.
All day there has been
an invisible staff
in my hand.
