Quietness and confidence

We marvel at the men who have flown the United States space shuttle into outer space, each time bringing the craft back to earth so that it can be used in future space voyages. What confidence they have had in the accuracy and precision of their intricate machinery and instruments! Confidence is a vital factor in many areas of life.

Is there any sure way we can find the lasting spiritual assurance we all need? Only in a deep spiritual reliance upon God. Christ Jesus, our Master, and the prophets and apostles had an overwhelming confidence in God. Jesus was able to heal the sick and the sinning, calm the storm-tossed sea, feed the multitudes, and raise the dead because his certainty in God's omnipresence, omnipotence, and omniscience never faltered.

Paul and Silas must have had a conviction of God's power to protect them and release them from the prison where they were bound; at midnight they "prayed, and sang praises unto God..." The Bible account continues, "And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed."  Acts 16:25, 26.
