About three years ago I became totally deaf in one ear and could hear very little in the other. Having for many years depended on God for healing, I asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. Then, when there appeared to be no progress after about three weeks, I felt that a greater effort on my part was necessary to achieve a healing. I decided to really work this out on my own.

I knew that hearing actually had nothing to do with physicality. Hearing, being a spiritual sense and therefore eternal, can never be lost. Hearing is of God, not of matter. The definition of God in the Glossary of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy reads (p. 587): "God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." I knew that as man, the perfect idea of God, I expressed the divine nature described in this definition by reason of reflection. Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 591 of Science and Health that man is "the compound idea of infinite Spirit; the spiritual image and likeness of God; the full representation of Mind." I knew I could not be separated from God, and my prayers followed this line of thought.

When a close member of my family, who is not a Scientist, asked if I would consent to using a hearing aid, I requested a little more time to work out the problem through prayer. I was sure there would be a healing. In fact, I never doubted for an instant that healing would come.
