God's purpose

Wherever we find ourselves, we may reason that none of us asked to be born into or put into this place. Human logic may say that we are here in this location, at this time, with this background, as the result of fate, chance, or accident.

Christian Science disputes the very basis of such thinking. It declares that man is not localized or mortal but is the infinite spiritual idea of the one infinite Mind, God, dwelling in Him. It explains that God, Mind, has created man to manifest His holy purpose, His will of spiritual light and love. And to the degree that we understand divine Truth, we find evidence of this divine purpose fulfilling itself in our experience. We find the one Mind guiding and supporting us moment by moment with its infinite intelligence, power, and presence.

Glancing through the Bible, we find great men and women who were called upon to carry out God's great purpose—for instance, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, and Mary, Christ Jesus' mother. In each case the divine purpose came as a clear command or prophecy that must be fulfilled. It never came in the form of a question, which could be accepted or rejected, such as: "Would you like to move from your home to the Promised Land?" or "Would you like to become the mother of a son and name him Isaac?" or "Would you please lead the children of Israel out of Egypt?"
