For some time now I have enjoyed the study of Christian Science, and I thank God for the well-being it has brought me. An understanding of divine Truth brings us renewal and comfort, as well as health and happiness. Christian Science reveals our spiritual perfection as God's beloved children and teaches that He is our Father-Mother, continually caring for us. Our inspired Leader offers this assurance (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 264), "When we learn the way in Christian Science and recognize man's spiritual being, we shall behold and understand God's creation,—all the glories of earth and heaven and man."
When I was stricken with bronchial asthma, I reached a point where any movement impeded my breathing. At night I slept sitting up. After praying incessantly to obtain relief, I asked a Christian Science practitioner for help.
This explanation of "substance" caught my attention (ibid., p. 468): "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay. . . . Spirit, the synonym of Mind, Soul, or God, is the only real substance." Suddenly I realized that what seemed to be discordant matter and faulty material action was the result of the belief that matter has substance and life, and that this life depends on organs called bronchi and on action called breathing. Instead of accepting this false, material concept about man, I needed to refute it and to become conscious of my true being as the expression of Spirit.
