Gaining the spiritual sense of words

The language of Spirit is spiritual. It manifests the Word that is God, bearing witness to the fullness of God's being, which includes His infinite universe of ideas.

In the Bible and in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, we find the Word made manifest in human language—words that represent the language of Spirit. The words in themselves are not the Word, any more than the material body of Jesus was the Christ. But to the degree that human language embodies the divine Word, it helps convey Truth to the receptive human consciousness. And just as Christian Scientists consider Christ Jesus to have so perfectly embodied the Christ, even so they see the Bible and Science and Health as manifesting the full and complete truth of the Word of God.

No wonder Scientists love the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health! Through these books, God's message, His Word, is reaching mankind. But as much as Scientists revere these books and love the beauty of their language, they do not worship them or the words they contain. They realize that there is no spiritual power in human words per se, but only in the spiritual sense of those words. Spiritual sense alone reveals the living Word behind the human symbols. Words, then, are servants and tools, aids in helping us grasp the reality we discern through them.
