Through application of the truths of Christian Science my career as a performing musician was greatly enhanced. By knowing that in reality God is the only performer or originator and that I am His expression, I was able to forsake the temptation to view myself as a talented mortal and thus allow the music to flow easily and beautifully. For many years I played in the major symphony orchestras in New York City, culminating as solo clarinetist with the National Broadcasting Symphony under Arturo Toscanini. There were many years of fulfilling, satisfying music-making.

At the height of my career, while playing an engagement in Puerto Rico with Pablo Casals, I was struck with facial paralysis and had to return home. A Christian Science practitioner was engaged immediately, and within a few weeks my face assumed its normal appearance and I was able to talk and eat without difficulty. However, when I started to practice, I could hardly produce a sound. It seemed as if the muscles involved had lost all flexibility and strength.
