Before erecting a "For sale" sign ...

When our house no longer meets our need and we know it's time to move, there is one important step we should take before any other. Even before erecting a "For sale" sign or looking for another place, we should take time to evaluate the things we are searching for as spiritual concepts or qualities rather than architectural features. The number of rooms, style of house, or special accommodations we desire may be important, but preconceived notions about physical arrangements may be limiting. Sometimes they keep us from recognizing a place that could be just right.

If we look beyond material structures to the spiritual qualities of home, housing problems become easier to solve. By establishing clearly the mental nature of our true, spiritual home, we find it relatively easy to check each house or apartment we see against this one ideal, instead of balancing the physical features of one against the others. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul." Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 269;

I once felt unhappy about the place where we were living. Without taking that first important step of exploring spiritual concepts, I began an energetic search for a better house. This effort was fruitless and quite exhausting. I sometimes felt as though moving to any other house would result only in trading one set of problems for another. Finally I stopped looking.
