After I was married I lived in a semitropical area

After I was married I lived in a semitropical area. We swam frequently and enjoyed participating in other water sports. For many months I suffered from infected ears, which gave me a great deal of pain. I began to understand that I needed to comprehend what real health is. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says (p. 373): "Establish the scientific sense of health, and you relieve the oppressed organ. The inflammation, decomposition, or deposit will abate, and the disabled organ will resume its healthy functions." This was exactly what happened to me, and the healing was permanent.

As a youngster these verses from the ninety-first Psalm comforted me and promised guidance and protection (vv. 11, 12): "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone." I felt that the presence of God's angels meant powerful, uplifting, and reassuring thoughts that could sustain me in any situation. The Bible teaches and Christian Science shows us how to prove that God's children are always completely protected by His law. There is no other mind to challenge divine Mind's loving mandate of good for His children.

One day, while waiting for my golfing companions, I rested against the handrailing of a footbridge, which gave way. I fell backwards some nineteen feet, striking my head on the roadbed below. As soon as I regained consciousness, I stated that I was a Christian Scientist and would rely solely on prayer and on God's power for healing. The medical doctor at my side—who had been summoned to assist and accompany me to the hospital—respected my request but told the others with me that just from visual evidence he knew I was in a very bad state. Aside from bruises on my legs, it appeared that there was serious damage to my skull, my ribs, and one of my shoulders.
