When my sister and I were very small, our dad would take us on his lap when he came home from work and hold court. In his sternest voice he would ask, "Have you been a good girl?" Then, accompanied by a scolding gesture: "See that big finger?"
I just sat there and quaked.
A negative answer to the first question meant an imminent encounter with the back of a hairbrush.
