While I was in Tokyo, on a journey in the Far East, I was seized...
While I was in Tokyo, on a journey in the Far East, I was seized by violent stomach cramps. Fear of food poisoning gripped me. Our tour was to leave early the next morning for Bangkok, and my travel companions showed great concern for me. They brought all sorts of medicines to my room and even insisted that I should take some pills right then. Although I was in a lot of pain, I managed gently to send everyone out of my room, and at the same time to let them know how much I appreciated their kindness. In spite of increasing discomfort I was not tempted to seek recourse through material means. Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says (Science and Health, p. 492), "Matter can afford you no aid." These words from Miscellaneous Writings, also by Mrs. Eddy, strengthened me too (p. 53): "You only weaken your power to heal through Mind, by any compromise with matter; which is virtually acknowledging that under difficulties the former is not equal to the latter."
I telephoned a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly prayed for me. Editors' Note: If you need help, public practitioners of Christian Science are ready to assist you by prayer. A list of those who give their full time to this healing work worldwide can be found in The Christian Science Journal. You can obtain this periodical at any Christian Science Reading Room. See the telephone directory for the Reading Room nearest you . I found it necessary to phone her repeatedly during the night because of my discomfort. My own prayer affirmed man's inseparability from God, and his ability to exercise his God-given dominion over matter. This Bible verse comforted me (II Chron. 20:15): "The battle is not yours, but God's." I made every effort to remain lucid, vigilant, receptive, and obedient to Truth.
When the tour guide called me at six the next morning to prepare for the flight to Thailand, I was completely healed. In reality there is nothing to be afraid of, because we are assured of Spirit's allness and matter's nothingness. These facts confirm our inseparability from God. Filled with joyous gratitude, I now understand more fully how healing can result from spiritual commitment.
