One day, during the time I was serving in the Royal Air Force in World War II, I recall earnestly praying to understand God. A few days later my prayer was answered when a deep spiritual illumination momentarily enabled me to glimpse the true nature of consciousness. I began to see that it is not fragmented into millions of individual human minds; it is one universal Mind. My new insight also convinced me that matter is an illusion.

A few months later I was introduced to Christian Science, and I attended my first Sunday service in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. What enormous relief and joy it was to hear these words from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy read during the service (p. 468): "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual."

A growing realization that the one universal Mind is God, and that man's real identity is entirely spiritual, quickly healed me of social drinking. Also recurrent bouts of asthma, which I had suffered since childhood, disappeared. And Christian Science was a source of guidance and protection for me during the war. On one occasion, in the middle of an air raid, I was suddenly impelled to take shelter in a doorway, and just seconds later a spent shell cap landed where I would have been walking.
