In July 1978 my car was hit by another vehicle, and I was taken by ambulance in an unconscious condition to a charity hospital. Two hours later I woke to find myself on a cart in the hall. A passing attendant said that because I hadn't a family doctor, no treatment had been administered. After I requested release, the staff took X-rays to determine if there were any broken bones; then they called my daughter to come for me. Because my car had been damaged beyond repair, kind neighbors drove me home and carried me to my apartment. People living near the accident scene removed my large, terrified dog from the car and paid a veterinarian to give him shelter overnight. They refused reimbursement for this.

I was unable to walk because of severe hip pains, which I suspected might be caused by torn ligaments. One of my daughters phoned a Christian Science practitioner in a city over a thousand miles away. This worker agreed to pray for me. I recalled that Mrs. Eddy assures us (Science and Health, p. 179), "Science can heal the sick, who are absent from their healers, as well as those present, since space is no obstacle to Mind." I had complete confidence that a beautiful healing would result.

But there was a lesson in patience to be learned. My first morning home I was eager to be active again. I felt so improved that I got out of bed and walked across the street. Then I suffered a relapse of pain in my hip and a frightening dizzy spell that put me back in bed. For three days I could not lift my head from the pillow without severe dizziness. I became very frightened. Finally my daughter stretched out her hands and literally pulled me to a sitting position. "Mother," she insisted, "God is with you!" This assurance of divine Love's ever-presence broke the mesmerism; and from then on the dizzy spells lessened, until I was able to get out of bed and gradually begin walking again.
