Confronting the headlines

Bible history shows us that wars, economic uncertainty, labor unrest, tyranny and terrorism, man-made and natural disasters, are not phenomena alone of the late twentieth century. They provided the equivalent of headline news in the times of Joseph and Joshua, King David and Elijah, when oppressive and destructive influences threatened the very survival of the people.

Though the outward effects and magnitude of today's incidents differ in many respects from those of biblical times, the root causes are always essentially the same. They are the outcome of mental upheavals—the working of conflicting ideologies, national interests, emotions, and religious beliefs against the advancing idea of Truth expressed by the prophets and the Master, and today by all who perceive the Christ, Truth.

Christian Science explains conclusively that whatever occurs in the world is directly attributable to the workings of thought. Nothing occurs on the human scene that does not result from mentality. Of material forces, Mrs. Eddy says, "They are the phenomena of mortal mind, and matter and mortal mind are one; and this one is a misstatement of Mind, God." Unity of Good, p. 35;
