Recently I was suddenly unable to hear properly

Recently I was suddenly unable to hear properly. Words spoken to me in a normal tone of voice were lost, although I could manage to understand telephone conversations. There were constant buzzing and sizzling noises in my ears.

This condition depressed and discouraged me, especially since our Christian Science Students Association meeting that year had related hearing and seeing to spirituality. I felt I had prayed and worked for increased spiritualization of thought. Now I faced this difficulty. However, prayer and study continued, and it was finally clear that my thinking needed careful examination. Resentment and self-pity stemming from feelings of overwork and lack of appreciation were uncovered and destroyed. I now made an effort to get a mortal sense of self out of the way and leave everything to divine Mind's direction.

The suggestion of advancing years had crept in, accompanied by deterioration of faculties. This was seen as a lie of matter-based thinking and promptly refuted. I knew that hearing and seeing are truly faculties of Soul, hence indestructible. Spiritual understanding includes listening with discernment to God's commands and obeying them. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures our faithful Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, states (p. 487): "There is more Christianity in seeing and hearing spiritually than materially. There is more Science in the perpetual exercise of the Mind-faculties than in their loss. Lost they cannot be, while Mind remains. The apprehension of this gave sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf centuries ago, and it will repeat the wonder."
