I am still thankful for my first healing in Christian Science...

I am still thankful for my first healing in Christian Science, because it taught me so much. I learned why the healing seemed delayed and why harmony was suddenly restored. I was working on a farm in France at the time. My throat became sore and I had fever. As a new student I studied and loved Christian Science and attended church services wherever I could. So I took no medicine and tried to apply what I then knew of this Science. I denied the condition as having reality. I affirmed that God does not create or know disease but He "healeth all thy diseases" (Ps. 103:3). I read Christian Science literature and went carefully over "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I tried to see myself as God had created me, perfect in His image.

Having prayed in this way, I probed for results—testing my throat—but swallowing remained painful. After some three days, when there was no apparent progress in my condition, my friends strongly urged me to call a doctor, and I submitted.

The doctor looked at my throat and told me an abscess was forming. This gave me a tremendous shock. Fear overwhelmed me. Mrs. Eddy reminds us in Science and Health that "'man's extremity is God's opportunity'" (p. 266). Suddenly it became quite clear to me that Christian Science must be applied to the letter. I must rely exclusively on God's healing power. I saw that I had been unsuccessful because of my doubt. Testing my throat had shown fear and lack of spiritual understanding.
