Lift up your heads, O ye gates (Ps. 24:7)

Modern biblical form critics connect this psalm with a festival of covenant renewal observed in ancient Israel at the new year. Verses 7-10 of the psalm were composed to be sung antiphonally by choirs stationed both upon the gates of the Jerusalem temple and within a procession moving toward the temple area. The procession may have included the Ark of the Covenant, to be received and enshrined at the opening of each new year as a symbol of renewed loyalty to God.
