The Afflatus Experience
The mountains were blanketed with a deep snowfall. As I sat on the front porch of our cabin my gaze came to rest on the branches of pine trees bending low under the weight of new mounds of snow. A gust of wind blew across the meadow and gently shook the snow from the trees. Relieved of the weight, the pine boughs vibrantly returned to their natural position.
What I had witnessed seemed to symbolize an afflatus experience —afflatus being not only a breath of wind but also inspiration or a communication of divine presence.
Many of us have felt the burden of difficult circumstances, carried the weight of a hard decision, sought relief from a physical problem. And then, having turned with all our hearts to God, felt the very presence of the Christ, the true idea of God, which so inspired us that the weight lifted and we won our freedom.
