One day I complained to a Christian Scientist friend that a young man I knew had difficulty finding suitable employment. I felt he was capable of better things than the job he held; but when I encouraged him to attend college and attain a higher education, he had said he was too tired to go to school after many hours of work.

My friend smiled and asked me, "If you think that a college education is such a good thing, why don't you obtain one yourself?" "How could I?" I asked her, pouring out reasons she already knew. I was employed all day in a factory. I had come from a Spanish-speaking country and my English was not very good. I felt it was too late for me because of my age.

When I finished, she told me that she knew I could do it. As a matter of fact, she was so sure of it that she offered to pay for my first semester's enrollment with the understanding that, if my grades were good, I would continue and finance it myself; but if I failed, we would never mention the subject again. She was very confident and I accepted. My grades were very high. I attended evening courses at different colleges and universities, then worked part time and attended day classes. I finally graduated from the University of Southern California, where I was immediately offered a teaching position.
