The Sooner the Better
The opportunity is here today for everyone to prove for himself that truth is demonstrable in human experience. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health exactly how this proving is done; "By lifting thought above error, or disease, and contending persistently for truth, you destroy error." Science and Health, p. 400; In the same book she writes of how she demonstrated that an understanding of God as Life brings about remarkable healings. After speaking of the necessity of bringing immortal Life to light, she continues with the following counsel: "We must begin, however, with the more simple demonstrations of control, and the sooner we begin the better." ibid., p. 429;
The Bible encourages us to use, or demonstrate, in our everyday affairs what we have learned and understood about God. The New Testament tells us how Christ Jesus, through his profound understanding of God, was able to make wonderful demonstrations of truth—of God's ever-operative law. He healed those who were sick. He supplied food to those in need, when there was little or no food available. He comforted the distressed. He overcame death. He subordinated the supposed effects of evil expressed in physical force and emotional reaction, not by using the carnal mind's own weapons in retaliation but by his conviction of unchanging Truth.
Jesus' proofs of the healing power of Truth and Love were not miraculous happenings. They were the fulfilling of God's law—the establishing of the truth of being in human experience. We can, and should, expect to see such proofs today. It is imperative that we learn how this can be done. We make such demonstrations only as we replace what is wrong with truth, as we revise mistaken human concepts by understanding the spiritually real. Acknowledgment of the supremacy of the power of God—Truth and Love—has a rectifying effect because Truth eliminates error and Love heals.
