Some years ago I had a wonderful experience of the power of God to heal. A little niece whom I am particularly fond of was incapacitated by a high fever and had to remain in bed. My family, who were not Christian Scientists, consulted a doctor, who diagnosed meningitis. My sister telephoned me immediately, imploring me to come, and I assured her that I would be there the next day.

All that night I prayerfully worked with Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I vigorously affirmed the truth that God never created suffering and sickness and that man is the image and likeness of God, not material but spiritual.

After much scientific prayer I had this conviction, which was a light to me: The prayer which goes forth hungering to God never returns to us void. I found the exact words in Science and Health (p. 2): "Are we benefited by praying? Yes, the desire which goes forth hungering after righteousness is blessed of our Father, and it does not return unto us void." I felt completely reassured, freed from distress and fear, and I knew that my niece, as God's child, could not be stricken with what is called sickness.
