Security: Substance, Not Symbol
Mrs. Eddy writes of Christian Science: "...it is God's right hand grasping the universe,—all time, space, immortality, thought, extension, cause, and effect; constituting and governing all identity, individuality, law, and power. It stands on this Scriptural platform: that He made all that was made, and it is good, reflects the divine Mind, is governed by it; and that nothing apart from this Mind, one God, is self-created or evolves the universe." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 364;
This understanding of the universe and what governs it is the only sure guarantee of safety for our persons, property, and way of life. It has often proved sufficient in itself to provide individuals with needed protection. Human means and methods—legal systems, police forces, safety regulations—best contribute to our protection when they are accompanied by a clear perception of the divine government.
The plight of mankind as materially depicted is precarious: frail, tiny, short-lived organisms clinging to a speck of dust, stabilized by an ill-understood force called gravity and protected by only a few miles of atmosphere against the hazards of space, the whole revolving on an axis and orbiting the sun at vast speed.
