From a child I had defective sight

From a child I had defective sight. It was in hope of healing that I took up the study of Christian Science over sixty years ago. At first there seemed to be little or no improvement, but I persevered with my study. After a number of years I was able to discard glasses. Today my sight is good, so that I can read any print.

During the First World War, I was never separated from my Bible and a pocket-size edition of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. On one occasion when I was in active service, Asian flu had reached what was called epidemic proportions. I had a high temperature and was to be evacuated with others from the front lines to the advanced dressing station. Before I could be placed on a stretcher, I was instantaneously healed. I knew God was with me and the only power. This was effective prayer. I was sent back to the front lines right away.

When my daughter was six months old, I received an urgent message to return home from church. I found the baby screaming and learned she had fallen backward onto a pan of boiling fat, which had been placed on the floor while the oven shelf was changed. I picked her up in my arms and took her into another room, away from a group of neighbors who had gathered. I reached out to God for guidance and acknowledged His presence and loving care. I pondered the ninety-first and twenty-third Psalms, and "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health (see p. 468). This powerful healing statement includes the words: "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error." The baby slept peacefully. No medication was used. A covering was placed over what appeared to be three deep burns. These were healed through prayer, leaving no scar.
