A year after she married my father, Mother returned to Ohio to visit her parents. The visit was extended for several weeks while Mother helped care for her mother, who had been a semi-invalid since her youth. During that period, in 1898, a friend sent a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy to Mother.

That loving gift had several far-reaching results. First, my grandmother was immediately and permanently healed of her persistent ailment. Also, Mother became a devoted student of this Science for the balance of her life, eventually entering its public practice. Her three children were born naturally, although she had been told by the family physician before her marriage that she would never be able to deliver a child by normal processes because of her bone structure.

One of the other results of that thoughtful gift of Science and Health is that my grandchildren are now the fifth generation who have depended totally on Christian Science for protection and guidance—and for healing, when healing was needed. Through the years we not only have been confronted with so-called children's diseases and common ailments, but there have been healings of pneumonia, tuberculosis, polio, gangrene, and cancer.
