I first heard of Christian Science over seventy years ago from a neighbor, who sat in the shade of a large tree in his yard and read for hours from a small black book. He was a fine elderly gentleman and everyone liked him. I was a very small child, and he and I were friends. He used to lift me over the fence that divided our yards and I would play in the shade. Sometimes he would read to me. While I would sit quietly and listen because he wanted me to, I was too young to understand what he read.

One day I climbed up into the tree; but as I started down I slipped, skinning both knees on the rough bark. When my neighbor saw what had happened, he picked me up and said, "Let's see what Mrs. Eddy has to say about this." He read out loud to me, and although I did not understand what he read, I felt that God did not want me to be hurt. And soon I was playing again. We moved away when I was of school age and I never saw my friend again, but that early contact blessed my life.

When I grew older, I investigated Christian Science and found that the book my friend read so religiously was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I borrowed a copy from the public library and read it through several times. I was young and in good health, so was not so deeply interested in the healing benefits; but I found the book was a beautiful companion to the Bible and contained much that could be used as a daily guide to a happier, more harmonious life.
