Don't Let Smoke Get in Your Eyes
Of course I could give up smoking any time I like, I said to myself. It would be only a matter of a little willpower. But why should I drop a pleasurable habit?
I was feeling rather cross because I had very recently begun to study Christian Science and had just read Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health, "It need not be added that the use of tobacco or intoxicating drinks is not in harmony with Christian Science." Science and Health, p. 454; Why should Mrs. Eddy pick on smoking, I argued, when there were worse errors, such as gossiping and scandalmongering, needing correction?
I continued to smoke, but all the time I had the uneasy feeling that I couldn't make progress in understanding and demonstrating Christian Science if I ignored the "no smoking" requirement.
