I would like to express my humble gratitude for the many wonderful healings I have had since I came to Christian Science and to elaborate on one that served as a catalyst to my experience as a Christian Scientist.

I am an athlete, once very active in the sports of bicycle racing and competitive fencing. Following the advice of coaches and other experienced people, I was involved in a rigorous training schedule, including the use of special vitamins, massage, and heat balms for the prevention of cramps. I was told that without this specialized care the human body couldn't function at the levels of fatigue I would submit it to.

Following these methods carefully and faithfully, I enjoyed a certain amount of success in both sports. But several times, when I was away from home at a race or meet and couldn't depend on my coach for massage and didn't have exactly the same diet, vitamins, sleep, and so forth, my performance suffered greatly because of my dependence on them. I experienced severe cramps, sunstroke, and dehydration, leading me to contemplate retirement from active competition.
