Ur of the Chaldees (Neh. 9:7)

An ancient city on the Euphrates River in an area of southern Mesopotamia that became part of the Babylonian Empire. Modern excavations have revealed private houses dating from the nineteenth century B.C. (probably contemporary with Abraham), a ziggurat temple, and artifacts of many kinds.
