In 1941 I went to the United States. At the end of the year I felt very ill, suffering from pain in the heart. The doctors examined me and told me that it was serious, and that I shouldn't do any kind of exercise. Shortly after that I visited a Christian Science Reading Room, where I was given the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Then I spent ten days traveling to Colombia.

I visited some doctors there and told them what had happened to me. They took tests and found I had syphilis. The medical diagnosis was that no person or thing could heal me, and that I wouldn't live more than three months.

I went to my parents' home in a nearby city, where I dedicated myself to reading Science and Health. At the end of a month I stopped taking the drugs given me by the doctors. As I continued to absorb the truth in Science and Health, the oppressive pains in the heart left me. My parents advised me to return to the doctors, but I told them I was well. Then I thought of the Bible verse quoted by Mrs. Eddy (ibid., p. 496): "When this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory" (I Cor. 15:54). This healing fulfills these words (Eph. 5:14): "Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light."
