When I was twenty-one years of age I was introduced to the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and I was presented with a new King James Bible. To heal physical ills through a spiritual understanding of God seemed positively natural and acceptable to me. Some seven years later I became a member of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and a little later, a member of The Mother Church.

I am grateful that my three children attended Christian Science Sunday School the greater portion of the period allowed to age twenty. Throughout this time they had remarkable freedom from physical ills, and I have continued with better and better health.

From the beginning of my study of Science I was most interested in the unreality of matter and evil, as belief in them appears to affect an individual—his character and his life. In order to become a church member it was necessary for me to gain a victory over the smoking habit. I wanted to quit smoking so that I could have church membership, but I fancied that I found a certain pleasure in the habit.
