Many years ago a neighbor offered Christian Science to my grandfather at a time when my grandmother was suffering from cancer in its last stages. She had been sent home by one of the leading clinics in the country to be with her four small children during what was considered to be "her last few days." Her healing was quick, complete, and permanent. She reared her children to maturity, enjoyed many grandchildren, and lived to be eighty-six.
Our family has realized the value of this beautiful way of demonstrating life eternal. That man's faculties are truly spiritual, I am a living example. At the age of five I wanted to mend my doll and I got Mother's solder which she used to mend aluminum pans. The solder did not come out readily, so I turned the tube up and looked into the end, pinching at the same time. The dried solder gave way and sprayed into both eyes, burning them. I screamed, but what I screamed was "the scientific statement of being," which I had learned from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (see p. 468). I asked my mother to wash but not look at the eyes. I was totally blind, but I remember clearly that I had no fear that I would not see. Credit can be given to my childlike faith in this healing, which was complete in a short time.
When I was fifteen I turned to the Bible and the textbook for healing of astigmatism and hay fever. The truths seemed so logical to me that I did not ask my parents or a Christian Science practitioner for assistance. I knew God would reveal what I needed day by day, and He did. I knew good vision comes from seeing good, and that I must learn to look through the veil of materialism to see the truth of God and man. It was the beginning of a systematic, persistent, and dedicated study to yield any acceptance of a selfhood apart from God and affirm my present perfection as His child.
