Troubled Teens, Perplexed Parents: Some Solutions
The solution to the problems of teen-agers and their parents is always to be found in a higher concept of God and man. These problems arise from the false belief that man is an unsatisfied, selfish, disobedient mortal, but Christian Science teaches that he is in truth the complete, perfect, spiritual idea of God. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "God is the parent Mind, and man is God's spiritual offspring." Science and Health, p. 336; Let's see how a better understanding of man and his relationship to God can help answer some familiar teen-age questions.
How many teen-agers have asked, "Don't you think I'm old enough to make my own decisions?"
For some time parents make most of the decisions for their children. But parents are wise if they gradually and joyfully relinquish doing this as the child matures. What do they do, then, if the youngster wants to step out on his own before he is ready? Whose decision is it as to when a child is ready? The possibilities for conflict seem infinite.
