The Healer

Love—synonymous with Mind—is the only healer. Mind heals by maintaining its presence here and everywhere. Mind is the source and circumference of all real being. "Mind," Mrs. Eddy tells us, "is the architect that builds its own idea, and produces all harmony that appears. There is no other healer in the case." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 41; Far from these statements relating to a transcendental or mystical realm, they help us to heal as we understand them.

To human sense, spiritually-minded individuals can heal disease on a metaphysical basis. Strictly speaking, these people are not the actual healers. They are those who are sufficiently spiritually-minded to know that Mind architects and maintains its own idea—man—and that pure Mind or Love "produces all harmony that appears."

Many Christians, including Christian Scientists, long to help the ailing more effectively through prayer. But the aim merely to be better mortal healers deflects us from this goal. To entertain a mortal sense of being is to place ourselves in the physical field where our patients appear to be, and so lose the ability to show them the way out. It is to be as open to problems and limitations as those we would help. This point cannot be overstressed: to Love, no instance of disease or misery is baffling or resistant, because to Love there is nothing but its own being and expression.
