Related to the Lesson-Sermon for June 8, 1975, in the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE QUARTERLY Subject: God the Only Cause and Creator

Remember the former things of old (Isa. 46:9)

The Hebrew word "former things" here is related to the word "in the beginning" which opens the book of Genesis, and the prophet may have chosen the word with this in mind. Gerhard von Rad sees "former things" as referring to "that saving history which began with the call of Abraham and the exodus from Egypt." Bernhard Anderson notes that references to the creation permeate the writing of this prophet, for whom "the Creation sets the stage for history."

Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image that is profitable for nothing? (Isa. 44:10)
