I first heard of Christian Science as a young man through my grandmother and an aunt, who were students of Christian Science. About this time I had a distressing experience with a punctured gland. This occurred while having a tooth pulled. Bleeding continued after two trips to the dentist and doctor. Turning to Christian Science, I was healed instantly through the prayers of a practitioner. However, I did not become interested in Science at that time.
It was years later, through another wonderful healing, that I became really interested in this religion. The problem was diagnosed by our family doctor as stomach ulcers. The medicine he gave me did not help. My condition became so bad that I was unable to drive my car. This, in turn, created another problem, since traveling was a vital part of my job. I was a supervisor for a large oil company, and my working area covered several counties in two states. The problem went on for several weeks, and my wife did the driving for me. I even considered giving up my job because I knew things could not go on this way. Finally, my wife asked me to see another doctor. I agreed, and an appointment was made. The day before the appointment I called my aunt, telling her of the problem. I asked her to pray for me in Christian Science. The next day, after several X rays and tests, the doctor said he could not find any ulcers, but that I did have a very nervous stomach.
That afternoon I went to see my aunt and asked her what I should do. The decision, she said, would have to be mine. I went home and threw all the medicine in the trash can. I took my stand right there to rely on Truth. I called a Christian Science practitioner and asked her for treatment. I then visited the Christian Science Reading Room and purchased a copy of the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. The librarian was very kind and helpful. I began to attend church services, where I felt a great deal of love expressed. My study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook was joyous, and I read many hours through the nights. From the Bible, Psalms 27 and 91 were very helpful.
