"I've nowhere to turn but to God"

Sybil Edwards has been active for many years in the operation and management of a family steel business in the north of England. She is now chairman of the company. Since 1961, she has served as a Justice of the Peace in her area of Yorkshire (now Cleveland). Both of these aspects of her life have brought her study of Christian Science into practical applications. In a conversation in London she talked about her career and the relevance in it of her religious convictions.

Opportunity, and appreciation for women and their professional skills, has developed only very gradually. Has this lag affected your career?

I never remember a period when I wasn't expected to be involved in one of my father's companies. Just after World War II we got into farming, and you can imagine the interesting challenges that presented. At the same time I still had to go on looking after a small building business which had fallen on troubled times. My father had said about that, "Well, you take this over and see what you can do with it."
