While I was in college during the 1930's, I became skeptical about religion. During this period of doubt I studied with a voice teacher who not only helped me with my singing but, because she was a Christian Scientist, gently opened my eyes to the truth of God and His idea, man, and ultimately to a whole new way of life.

Just as plans were made to launch my concert career, I was drafted into the Army. The day before I was to leave, this teacher presented me with a small Bible and a copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.

Several weeks after Army induction, when things seemed unjust and more than I could bear, I opened the textbook to the chapter on Prayer. It not only inspired me but gave me the moral courage to take a stand for Principle, God, that resulted in a happy and satisfying military assignment. The years of military service were among the most rewarding of my life. By the time I returned to civilian life I had begun the serious study of Christian Science, and a few years later was able to avail myself of the privilege of active branch church membership.
