Extending Our Abilities

In education, an enrichment program includes a variety of activities and studies designed to challenge abler students. Educators understand that a happy, well-adjusted child is often one who is making full use of his abilities.

As students of Christian Science, we might consider adopting an enrichment program for ourselves. We often need to accept opportunities that stretch our ability. When we do this, new demands will be made on the Christlike qualities we inherently possess but sometimes scarcely know we have. Perhaps we turn down an opportunity to serve in some church office, or perform a community service, or undertake some new venture because we mistrust our ability to do it.

In Christ Jesus' parable of the talents See Matt. 25:14–30; a man who was going on a long journey entrusted his wealth to his three servants, five talents to one, two to another, and one to a third. When the man returned, he had high praise for the two servants who had doubled the sums, but he severely chastised the servant who had fearfully hidden the one talent given to him.
