Does Mind or Matter Animate the Body?
What animates and controls us? Is it the material brain, receiving and correlating an endless stream of physical stimuli? Or is it divine Mind, continually asserting itself in our consciousness through our spiritual desire and understanding?
In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says: "Mind, God, sends forth the aroma of Spirit, the atmosphere of intelligence. The belief that a pulpy substance under the skull is mind is a mockery of intelligence, a mimicry of Mind." Science and Health, pp. 191—192;
In Christian Science the terms Mind, Spirit, Life, are complementary and inseparable. They imply that intelligence, substance and life—the basic elements of the real man as the expression, or idea, of Mind—are spiritual, not material. This understanding of man and his perfect relation to God brings our lives and bodies under the control of divine Mind.
