Learn to Lean

One foot out of bed and I knew it was going to be "one of those days." An exam coming up that morning, for which I felt unprepared; a terrible disagreement the day before with my best friend, leaving me not only without my friend but without a ride to school; and to top things off it had started to rain. The weather matched my mood exactly—dark and dismal.

With a ten-block hike to school facing me I thought there wasn't time for my usual routine of reading part of the Lesson-Sermon In the Christian Science Quarterly; before starting out. But, with my mom's encouragement, I did open Science and Health to find one good thought to carry with me through the day. Mrs. Eddy's first sentence is, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Science and Health, p. vii; Time to read the words quickly again.

"Well," I decided, "those words may have been true in Mrs. Eddy's time, but they just aren't applicable to this day. No one could possibly think that a day like this one is going to be 'big with blessings'!"
