My first physical healing in Christian Science occurred when I was twelve. I was stricken with quinsy, and it was said I was passing on. A few years earlier our family had been briefly introduced to Science by a relative. At the time of the quinsy Mother ran to the nearby home of a Christian Science practitioner for help. Minutes later the practitioner stood in my room, quietly praying. Nothing was said, but I felt the power and the great love of Christ, which his understanding of God brought to the sickroom. I was healed, and there was no period of convalescence necessary.

When I was seventeen, at the urging of relatives who wanted me to visit them, I entered this country on a pleasure boat without going through usual procedures with the immigration authorities. However, once I was here, my presence was reported, and the immigration office requested that I go there as soon as possible for a physical examination.

In anxiety I wanted the help of a Christian Science practitioner, and my aunt took me to see one in his office. The practitioner made it clear that we should be law-abiding citizens. He agreed to treat me. I went for a physical examination the next morning. The final tests showed tuberculosis, one lung worse than the other, and general poor health. However, I was given three days before I would have to have another test. During this time the practitioner prayed for me. I had lost all fear during my first visit to his office.
