Sing a New Song
What kind of a "new song" is the Psalmist talking about when he urges, "O sing unto the Lord a new song"? Ps. 96:1;
He sang of God's goodness and love for His children because he knew God as the source of all existence, harmony, happiness, and well-being. The ever-new song is the joyful affirmation of God's presence and care.
The cause of fear and despair is the belief that God, good, is absent. If, when faced with having to deal with sickness or any other discordant situation, we knew it was unreal—no part of true existence—would we be tempted to be fearful or doubtful of healing? The bitterness of discouragement is felt when we harbor the belief that affliction is a reality and must be endured or is here to stay—that its material conditions or circumstances cannot be readily overcome. The consequent fear and doubt are added to our struggle.
