I have had many healings in Christian Science and proofs of God's care. I was always grateful for these, but I never really accepted true spiritual regeneration or adopted the everyday living of Christian Science until the following emergency. Then it seemed as though God said, "You had better make up your mind which way you are going and get with it."

A year and a half ago, I went out to the airport in the evening to do some skydiving. Another jumper and I went up to 7,200 feet to do some relative work. This entails maneuvering your body in the air to make contact with other jumpers to form a star or circle.

At opening altitude, 2,000 feet, I was unable to open my main parachute, so I went for the reserve chute and pulled the rip cord. It exploded upon opening. The opening shock was the severest I have ever experienced. When I looked up at the chute, all I could see were holes and tears and fluttering pieces of nylon fabric. Later I found that of twenty-three panels making up the chute, eleven were torn and useless, leaving twelve panels still functioning. I was coming down with exceptional speed and only had time to say, "Oh, God!"
