Fishers of men (Matt. 4:19)
This unusual figure of speech probably seemed startling to Jesus' listeners. In the rabbinic tradition and such passages as Jeremiah 16:16–18, catching men as fish illustrated the exposure and punishment of sin; but Jesus was referring, rather, to the rescue of the individual from evil.
