The Bible's Place in Christian Science Services

While my wife and I were traveling in the Orient, we were shown a beautiful ring. The large main stone was set in gold and surrounded by diamonds. We saw how the setting, including the diamonds, helped focus attention on the central stone. Because of the setting we could better appreciate the quality of the stone, its depth of color, the perfection of its cut.

How like that stone is the spiritual message of the Bible in Christian Science church services! As interpreted and explained by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health, the Bible's teaching is a priceless jewel. The order of the services is designed to bring out the full beauty and depth of what the Scriptures have to tell us of God's goodness and His supremacy over evil. Each service points out the importance of the scriptural message to each one of us.

It is not surprising that Mrs. Eddy gave the Bible such an essential place in the order of the church services. Her deep study of the Bible was a primary element in her discovery of Christian Science. She saw that if we really want to understand what Christian Science is, we must study the Bible. And through her writings she leads us to the spiritual inspiration and understanding we need in order to grasp the teachings of the Bible, and to see how practical they are in meeting all the demands of daily life.
