I had undergone hospital tests to please a close relative...

I had undergone hospital tests to please a close relative. I believed that by submitting to the tests the member of my family would be satisfied, and that nothing would be found, but the results of the tests were positive, and the doctor said I had cancer of the uterus. He scheduled a complete operation, along with medical treatments for years to come. He could guarantee nothing but claimed there was no other way.

I remember saying to myself, "Oh, yes, there is another way. Truth is the only thing operating. I am a Christian Scientist, and it is time I relied fully on God, and not be tempted to desert what I've learned of Him." I realized I had to pull out from under the medical opinions laid down, and that the only place disease could occur for me was in my own thinking. There are no material substitutes for God's healing power. My belief was the only thing that needed healing, for in accepting a lie I gave disease the only identity it had. My husband was reluctant at first, but I was so firm that he supported me. The doctor just shook his head and tried to change my decision, but I thanked him for his sincere dedication and left.

We told no one, but I remained home from my employment as an athletic director for a year and a half, although I did continue my church activities. Most of my time was spent in a continued study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, especially the chapter on Christian Science Practice in the textbook, Science and Health. I also studied my Christian Science class notes thoroughly, and was most grateful for the prayerful treatment of a Christian Science practitioner.
