My first healing in Christian Science was in 1913, when our city was partially inundated by a flood. We had thirteen feet of water in our home, and when the flood receded, my grandparents and I had the task of cleaning and restoring the house. I became ill, and our family physician was called. He said I was on the verge of diphtheria and he would call the next day and give me an antitoxin to prevent this. He said he was reluctant to administer the drug because of its bad side effects but felt it was necessary.

In the meantime a Christian Science friend came to see me, and when she heard this verdict, she remarked, "You do not have to take the antitoxin, and you do not have to develop diphtheria, if you believe in God and believe that He can heal you." I replied, "I do believe in God, and I also believe that He can heal me."

The next day the physician found me much better and asked what I had done. He found no need to administer an antitoxin. I told him a Christian Scientist had called on me and told me God did not make the condition and would heal me. The physician replied he would always remember Christian Science as able to heal because he had seen the results himself.
