Penetrating Deeply to Truth

Deep space probes ... exploration of the great hollows and troughs of the ocean floor ... radio telescopes seeking out the remotest objects in our galaxy ... the electron microscope peering into minute points of material life. Deep probing is a familiar concept now. And in our examination of the truths of being as they're disclosed by Christian Science—a more important examination than any other mankind can engage in—we can more than parallel the depth and vigor of these material probes. Christian Science urges us to it and enables us to do it.

We can, through spiritual sense, probe true existence more penetratingly than any lens or instrument can examine matter and space. And our doing it has practical consequences. Through Christian Science we can extend our insight to the very core of all things. Doing so is prayer. This has been the method of spiritually-minded people down the ages. So they've seen things others might have missed. When the king of Syria aimed to destroy Elisha, Elisha prayed that his servant could be as aware of their security as he was. And the young man's spiritual vision was deepened. And he too saw that "the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha" II Kings 6:17; —that he and his companion were safe.

Today's supercommunicating media give us access to specialists in diverse fields and to the conclusions of their research. This is highly valuable in itself, but it ought to stimulate individual thinking and not be allowed to substitute for it.
