In the spring of 1901, my parents moved into a community in the country where a cousin of my mother's lived. Soon after the move the cousin and her family came for an all-day visit with our family and brought with them a book, the textbook of Christian Science. Though my parents were strictly religious, they had never heard of Christian Science, so this cousin told of having had a wonderful healing by reading this book, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and offered to loan it to them.

Father often read aloud from Science and Health, and we all listened. Mother, too, read it in her spare time. She became a good student with a clear understanding. The main thing I got from listening was that God is Mind and that "What God cannot do, man need not attempt" (Science and Health, p. 231). Of course, it takes study to distinguish between the divine Mind and mortal mind, and to learn to utilize the power of the divine Mind in human affairs. But from that time on, Mind, God, was my Physician.

The first wonderful healing in the family was that of one of my sisters of what two doctors termed "quick consumption."
