LIFE IN THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY

Next, the World of Work?

It's the transition that's a bit scary. In the boating scene we've all felt the need of an extra boost of confidence making the final step from the solid wharf to the wave-rocked tender. Just have to let go and trust, have to take the risk that we've got the balance and stamina to launch off into another rhythm.

Similarly, by the time a student has come to the pushing off point from the academic community his life is pretty solid. He's at the top of the status ladder. But he has to leave all that now. He will have to distill all the theories he has learned. He won't be able to battle the instructors, the institution, and the world from this inside vantage point anymore. For years he has been protected, has had his life planned for him for the purpose of learning. All of a sudden he has freedom. Here comes a new time frame in which he must produce.

There is often a gasp of fear with the first gulp of freedom. "I'm on my own!" Even after finding the first summer job (and wasn't that an experience!) the transition from student to worker becomes more than just changing hats.
